There is a road in South Florida that stops people mid-drive. Where passengers put down their phones. Where newcomers ask the driver to slow down because they cannot quite believe what they are seeing.
That road is Old Cutler Road — and after a lifetime of living in South Florida I still feel it every single time I drive it.
I drove it last week and filmed the whole thing. Because some things need to be seen to be understood. And Old Cutler Road is one of them.
What Is Old Cutler Road?
Old Cutler Road — officially State Road 959 — is a two-lane road running approximately 11 miles through the communities of Coral Gables, South Miami, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, and Cutler Bay in Miami-Dade County. It runs roughly parallel to US-1 but feels like a completely different world — a world of ancient canopy, natural beauty, and some of the most prestigious residential real estate in all of South Florida.
Quick Facts
Official name: State Road 959 — Old Cutler Road
Length: Approximately 11 miles
Communities served: Coral Gables · South Miami · Pinecrest · Palmetto Bay · Cutler Bay
Northern terminus: Near SW 57th Avenue and SW 72nd Street · South Miami
Southern terminus: Near SW 216th Street · Cutler Bay
Notable feature: Ancient banyan and live oak canopy — one of the last remaining in South Florida
The Banyan Canopy — What Makes This Road Extraordinary
Old Cutler Road's defining characteristic is its extraordinary tree canopy — a tunnel of ancient banyans, live oaks, gumbo limbos, and tropical hardwoods that arch over the road and create one of the most dramatic and beautiful driving experiences in the entire state of Florida.
Many of these trees are decades old — some approaching a century. Their root systems extend across the road. Their canopies create a shade tunnel that feels genuinely otherworldly in the middle of a major metropolitan area. On a South Florida summer morning, driving Old Cutler Road under this canopy — with filtered light breaking through the leaves and the sound of birds overhead — is an experience that residents describe as genuinely restorative.
It is also one of the most photographed roads in South Florida — and for good reason. The banyan sections are extraordinary by any standard, anywhere in the world.
✅ Sandra's personal note: I have driven Old Cutler Road hundreds of times in my life. I filmed it last week for my TikTok and Instagram — and even through a phone camera it is stunning. Some places are simply impossible to describe adequately. This is one of them. You have to drive it.
Cycling and Walking Old Cutler Road
Old Cutler Road is one of South Florida's most beloved cycling routes — and the combination of the banyan canopy, the relatively modest traffic compared to nearby US-1, and the access to multiple parks and natural areas makes it genuinely exceptional as a recreational route.
The road connects Matheson Hammock Park in Coral Gables — at 9610 Old Cutler Road — to Coral Reef Park in Palmetto Bay and continues south through Cutler Bay providing access to the natural areas near Biscayne National Park. For cyclists who want to extend their ride, the route continues through some of the most beautiful residential neighborhoods in South Florida.
The Old Cutler Trail — a dedicated paved path that runs alongside portions of Old Cutler Road — provides a separated cycling and walking surface for portions of the route. This trail is maintained by Miami-Dade County Parks and is one of the most popular recreational trails in the county.
